Introduction
This web-based mapping application will allow you to select, query and zoom to areas
of interest by town, major basin or HUC-12 subwatershed, and will display summarized
water quality information by HUC12 and by basin. Once a HUC-12 subwatershed is selected,
"Causes" of water quality concerns for that particular HUC-12 will appear in the
"Causes" tab window. A Causes Grid can also be displayed showing all the causes
that exist for all HUC-12s in a particular major basin.
Navigation Basics
In order to use this mapping application to its full capabilities, you need to know
how to use the navigation tools associated with the map display. These tools/buttons
are found directly above the map display (see below). Hover the cursor over each
button to see the name of the tool.
Full View, Zoom, and Print: Click once on these buttons and wait for the
map to respond.
 |
Full View - zooms to the extent of the whole State |
 |
Zoom In To Center - zooms in (to center of map display) by a pre-determined amount |
 |
Zoom Out From Center - zooms out (from center of map display) by a pre-determined
amount |
 |
Print - Opens a new web page showing just the current map, suitable for printing.
See Instructions for Printing below.
|
 |
Help - Brings up this page. |
Zoom in, Pan, and Select from Map: click on these buttons to control the
function of the cursor. For example, when the Zoom In tool is in use, place the
cursor over the area you want to enlarge, click, and wait for the map to respond.
Select by Site allows you to immediately see details about the area you click on,
including town name, basin, and HUC. The Zoom In, Pan, and Select by Site tools
remain active until a different tool is selected. You can tell which tool is active
by seeing which button is depressed.
 |
Zoom In - zoom in via a manually created zoom window extent |
 |
Pan - manually move/pan to different areas of the map |
 |
Select From Map - allows you to select, in one left mouse click, a town, major basin
and HUC-12 and then display the impairments list for that HUC-12 |
Zoom Out/In Bar, Directional Arrows:

This Zoom Out/In Bar acts in the same way as the "Zoom In To Center" and "Zoom Out
From Center Buttons".
The four short black arrows around the map allow you to pan north, south, east or
west by a pre-determined amount.
Using The Primary Functionality Of The Web Mapping Tool
When the application is first opened, you should see a map of the entire state showing
town and major basin boundaries. Several options are available to help you focus
on an area of interest.
To Select an area of interest directly from the map:
-
Use the Select From Map button, Zoom In, and other navigational tools described
above to zoom directly to the area you are interested in
To select and/or zoom to a MA City/Town:
- Go to the "Town" pulldown menu and choose a City/Town from the pulldown list.
The application will automatically update/refresh to show the selected City/Town
as shaded. This shading may be difficult to discern at a state-wide scale.
- To zoom to just the extent of the chosen City/Town, click the "Zoom" text next
to the City/Towns pulldown menu.
Once a City/Town is chosen, only the major basin(s) that the town falls within
or overlaps will appear in the Major Basin pull-down menu. Alternatively, if no
City/Town is chosen, all major basins (in MA) will appear on this pull-down menu
listing.
To select and/or zoom to a Major Basin and display a Causes Grid:
- Go to the "Major Basin" pulldown menu and choose a major basin from the pulldown
list. The application will automatically update/refresh to show the selected major
basin as shaded in green.
- To zoom to just the extent of a chosen major basin, click the "Zoom" text next
to the Major Basin pulldown menu.
Once a major basin is selected, all HUC-12 subwatersheds that fall within the chosen
basin will appear on the "HUC-12" pulldown menu listing. Also, a Causes Grid can
be displayed (and printed out) that shows all water quality concerns for all the
HUC-12 subwatersheds within the chosen major basin.
- Click the "Causes Grid" text just below the Major Basin pulldown menu area. A
new web browser window should popup that displays the Causes Grid for the chosen
major basin. For example:
Click on the X box in the upper right to close out the pop-up Basin Causes
Grid and return to the map.
To select a HUC-12 To Display Its Impairment Causes and Water Quality Concerns:
- Go to the "HUC-12" pulldown menu and choose a HUC-12 name from the listing. Or,
using the Select From Map tool, click directly on the area of interest. The chosen
HUC-12 will display as shaded in yellow on the map. The HUC-12 ID number will be
listed just below the HUC-12 pulldown menu area.
- To zoom to just the extent of the chosen HUC-12, click the "Zoom" text next to
the HUC-12 pulldown menu.
Note: Clicking on the Refresh button
in the main browser window will clear/reset all of the previously made town, basin
and/or HUC-12 selections.
Once a HUC-12 subwatershed is selected, you should see the listing of impairments
and water quality concerns under the "Causes" tab/section. For example:

The "Sources" tab/section will display land use statistics for the chosen HUC-12
subwatershed. This information is used to determine likely sources of nonpoint source
pollution and to select Best Management Practices for remediation. For example:

The "Further Information" tab/section will give the user additional information
about the Watershed-Based Plan project as well as links to the technical memorandums
and quality assurance plans for the currently chosen major basin. For example:
Instructions for Printing

- Click on the "Causes Grid" link just below the Major Basin pulldown menu. Another
web browser window should pop up showing the Causes Grid for the selected major
basin.
-
Go to "File" then "Print", or click on the printer icon. In the "Select Printer"
area, you should see your available printer(s). Choose the printer you want to use
by clicking on it. Click on the "Preferences" button. At this point, the print page

Print the entire watershed application screen ("Screen Shot")
- Perform the desired query/operation on the web site.
- On your keyboard, hold down the "Ctrl" key and click on the "Print Screen" key.
- Open a new document in an application that displays graphics files, such as MS
Word, Paint, PowerPoint, or even the body of an e-mail message.
- In the new document, place the cursor where you want to paste the screen shot.
- Hold down the "Ctrl" key and click the "V" key. This is the keyboard shortcut
for pasting.
- Go to "File" then "Print", or click on a printer icon (if one exists in the application
you are using). Proceed in a similar manner as the above methods for printing.
- Some applications, such as Paint and Adobe Acrobat, allow you to cut/clip out
just the part of the pasted graphic that you want to see and save.
- This file can then be saved in various graphics file formats, depending on the
application being used.
